Kompost the Bay View Bash
Kompost Kids wants to change how we think about “waste.” After all, we like to say “it’s only waste if it’s wasted” and know that food scraps and recyclables are an important part of building a more sustainable future for all of us. Volunteers of all ages learn what the waste stream looks like and the immense volume of material produced at events like street festivals. Participants walk away (albeit a little dirty) with a new respect keeping things out of our landfills, and we hear things like “I’ll never look at another plastic water bottle the same way again.”
About Kompost Kids
Kompost Kids Inc. is a 100% volunteer run nonprofit dedicated to educating the public, businesses, and institutions about the benefits of compost. Kompost Kids also seeks to reclaim organic materials from landfills to create soil for community-based agriculture projects.
About the Bay View Bash
The Bay View Bash is Milwaukee’s largest all-volunteer street festival. It takes place on the 3rd Saturday of September between Potter and Clement on Kinnickinnic Avenue in Bay View, Milwaukee. This year’s Bash is September 16th. If you have questions regarding the Bash, please check out their website at: www.bayviewbash.org
Volunteers are need for Saturday, September 16th during the festival and Sunday September 17th to complete sorting. Participants will receive a super-cool Kompost Volunteer t-shirt (pending sign-up date) and either a drink ticket for the festival, or food on Sunday. These roles are subject to change depending on the immediate needs of the festival. Gloves are provided; we recommend participants wear sturdy shoes and clothes that can get dirty.
People signed up to be a compost attendant are asked to perform any of the following tasks based on what the immediate needs are during the event:
Compost Sorter - Sort and separate recyclable, organic and non salvageable material destined from the landfill into appropriate receptacles. This is the key role for Kompost Kids - we have diverted many tons of food waste from the landfill with this method.
Waste Hauler - Retrieve waste from receptacles stationed throughout the festival and replace bags or liners. This is done in pairs.
Waste Station Education - Educate the public about appropriate receptacles for their waste and assist them and sorting materials into the correct bin.
Assist with start of day set up for the event including building sorting stations weigh stations placed throughout the festival education facilities and other tasks as needed
Assist with end of day disassembly of equipment.
How To Get Involved:
Saturday (9/16/17) Volunteers:
Interested individuals or groups can sign up online for Saturday during the Bash here! https://signup.com/client/invitation2/secure/1976025/true#/invitation
Sunday (9/17/17) Volunteers:
We have the opportunity to continue sorting on Sunday for large groups of volunteers (minimum 10 people). This requires a “team leader” from your group to coordinate with a Kompost Kids board member for timing and planning. If you would like to bring a group on Sunday, please contact: email@example.com to arrange the time and location.
Zero Waste Report
The Bay View Bash is a “near zero waste event.” We would like one skilled volunteer to help us draft a report about our sustainability efforts using the Zero Waste criteria to “reduced waste to landfill, incineration or the environment by 90% or more.” This person would work with a Kompost Kid to draft the report. Contact Marion Ecks firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
